Parents in school

The Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles adopted a framework to promote the success of students with parental responsibilities. By this measure, the CEGEP wishes to contribute to the reconciliation of family and studies by offering an inclusive and understanding environment.  Why pay special attention to students with parental responsibilities? Parents in college face specific issues and challenges that can influence motivation and perseverance. Among these:

  • Have a job to meet your needs and those of your child(ren).
  • Time management and priorities related to all responsibilities.
  • Access and custody fees.
  • Absences related to the needs of his or her child(ren).

It is therefore recommended that you declare your parent status at the start of the session to facilitate communication with your teachers and to organize your studies according to your needs.

Declare parent status

Contact your Academic advisor

Your Academic Advisor will give you a declaration form to complete and you will need to send them the required supporting documents.

For your status as a student parent, you must be in one of the following situations:

  • Student who is at least 20 weeks pregnant;
  • Student who is the head of a single-parent family with a child under 18 years of age on September 30 of the school year;

Students who live with their child (or the child of their spouse) under the age of 18 on September 30 of the school year (marital status), in shared or full custody.

Available services

Once your parental status has been recognized by the CEGEP, make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to discuss your parental situation and to find out what services are available based on your needs. Here are some examples:

  • Entrance scholarship program (by drawing lots among student parents who declared their status at the time of the census).
  • Priority for a place in a CPE when an agreement exists. Check this information with Audrey Viel, guidance counselor for success (contact details at the bottom of the page).
  • Recognition of student status deemed full-time. If you are receiving training from a Quebec Services Office, consult your agent first before making any schedule changes.
  • Offer of inclusive activities for families.
  • If you encounter more significant challenges or obstacles in your studies, you can make a request to Adapted Services.
