The Gaspé campus of the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles offers programs in French and English. Several forms of immersion are offered to students depending on their program of study, in order to strengthen their skills in a second language and make the most of their time at CEGEP!
To do an immersion, here are the criteria to respect:
- Student whose high school diploma (subjects of Secondary 4 and 5) was issued in English and who is registered in a French program at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles (Gaspé campus), in whole or in part;
- Student whose high school diploma (subjects of Secondary 4 and 5) was issued in French and who is registered in an English program at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles (Gaspé campus), in whole or in part.
All students who meet these criteria and who have second language skills are able to participate in immersion with the guidance offered by the CEGEP. A validation of your aptitudes can be done to offer you the best conditions for success.
Evaluations are conducted in the language of the course.
Students who wish to study in the following programs may do all of their studies in English by applying for admission to the English sector of the Gaspé campus. They will be able to follow their entire training in English:
- Adventure Tourism
- Natural Science
- Social Science (Individuals and Society or Administration profiles)
- Springboard to a DCS
Different forms of partial immersion are offered to students depending on the program in which they are studying.
Social Sciences or Natural Sciences
Students in the Humanities and Natural Sciences programs can choose the courses they wish to take in English or French on a “pick and mix” basis.
Here are some possible partial immersion scenarios:
- Complete all courses of one or more semesters in immersion.
- Take only general or specific training in immersion.
- Do some specific courses in immersion.
Adventure Tourism Techniques
Adventure Tourism students can take their general education courses in French and complete their specific training in English immersion.
Forestry Technology, Accounting and Management Techniques and Industrial Maintenance Technology
Students can take their specific education courses in French and complete their general training in English immersion.
It is also possible for students from other programs on the Gaspé campus to carry out an immersion program according to a personalized plan.
The Institutional Learning Assessment Policy also provides for special measures in the marking of assignments for immersion students:
“For allophone or immersion students, 10% of the points will be awarded for language quality during the first year, but the student will be allowed to recover this 10% in full if he/she assumes the correction of the works done within five days. In the second year, a total of 10% is still awarded for language quality. The immersion student can recover up to half of the points (5%) if they make the correction. In the third year, the same rule is applied to all students. There is no penalty for language quality for allophone or immersion students on in-class exams. They are entitled to a translation dictionary.”
Students who enroll in immersion receive individualized guidance from their teachers, as well as access to the services of the assistance center and peer tutoring. They can also benefit from supervised study hours in English, called the “language workshops.”
