The Gaspé campus of the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles offers programs in French and English. Several forms of immersion are offered to students depending on their program of study, in order to strengthen their skills in a second language and make the most of their time at CEGEP!
To do an immersion, here are the criteria to respect:
All students who meet these criteria and who have second language skills are able to participate in immersion with the guidance offered by the CEGEP. A validation of your aptitudes can be done to offer you the best conditions for success.
Evaluations are conducted in the language of the course.
Students who wish to study in the following programs may do all of their studies in English by applying for admission to the English sector of the Gaspé campus. They will be able to follow their entire training in English:
Different forms of partial immersion are offered to students depending on the program in which they are studying.
Students in the Humanities and Natural Sciences programs can choose the courses they wish to take in English or French on a “pick and mix” basis.
Here are some possible partial immersion scenarios:
Adventure Tourism students can take their general education courses in French and complete their specific training in English immersion.
Students can take their specific education courses in French and complete their general training in English immersion.
It is also possible for students from other programs on the Gaspé campus to carry out an immersion program according to a personalized plan.
The Institutional Learning Assessment Policy also provides for special measures in the marking of assignments for immersion students:
“For allophone or immersion students, 10% of the points will be awarded for language quality during the first year, but the student will be allowed to recover this 10% in full if he/she assumes the correction of the works done within five days. In the second year, a total of 10% is still awarded for language quality. The immersion student can recover up to half of the points (5%) if they make the correction. In the third year, the same rule is applied to all students. There is no penalty for language quality for allophone or immersion students on in-class exams. They are entitled to a translation dictionary.”
Students who enroll in immersion receive individualized guidance from their teachers, as well as access to the services of the assistance center and peer tutoring. They can also benefit from supervised study hours in English, called the “language workshops.”
