Unique Study Options

Second Language Immersion

Several forms depending on your program and your eligibility

The Gaspé campus of the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles offers programs in French and English. Several forms of immersion are offered to students depending on their program of study and their eligibility for instruction in English1. This will allow you to improve your skills in a second language and get the most out of your time at CEGEP.

The measures also facilitate access for English-speaking students in the region to the program of their choice, including those offered in French.

Depending on the admission basis, a validation of your aptitudes can be done to offer you the best conditions for success.

Evaluations are conducted in the language of the course.

Immersion in French programs

English-speaking or allophone students who wish to do so may enroll in one of the programs offered in French. The possibilities vary depending on the person’s eligibility for instruction in English.

  • English-speaking students holding a certificate of eligibility, enrolled in a French-speaking program:
    • General education2 may be done in English, as well as the standard language test. The student will be in French immersion in their specific training3.
  • English-speaking allophone student not holding a certificate of eligibility:
    • General education will be done in French, as well as the standard language test. The program will therefore be entirely in French.

  1. General education includes French, philosophy, physical education, and English courses as well as complementary courses.
  2. Specific education consists of courses specific to the chosen program of study.

Custom Guidance

The Institutional Learning Assessment Policy also provides for special measures in the marking of assignments for immersion students:

“For allophone or immersion students, 10% of the points will be awarded for language quality during the first year, but the student will be allowed to recover this 10% in full if he/she assumes the correction of the works done within five days. In the second year, a total of 10% is still awarded for language quality. The immersion student can recover up to half of the points (5%) if they make the correction. In the third year, the same rule is applied to all students. There is no penalty for language quality for allophone or immersion students on in-class exams. They are entitled to a translation dictionary.”

Students who enroll in immersion receive individualized guidance from their teachers, as well as access to the services of the assistance center and peer tutoring.
